Benefits of obesity

Obesity is frequently blamed for various health ailments. Obesity also makes the obese people sad because they are commonly criticized for their excessive weight. However, there are few benefits of being obese, health wise. Here we will look into two such health related benefits that an obese individual may have by being obese.

First, in osteoporosis, people with higher body mass index (which includes overweight, obese) are less likely to develop the disease. Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the bone density and mass reduces and makes bones prone to fractures. Underweight individuals are more prone to develop this disease.

Second, in diabetes, according to a recent finding, obese old  people with diabetes have lower death rate than their less weight counterparts. The reason is yet not understood.

Death rates in those with type 2 diabetes, however, were lower among obese patients compared to normal-weight patients. But this survival benefit was seen only among the oldest patients while the youngest obese patients had a higher risk of dying, the researchers reported.

For overweight and obese diabetic patients aged 67 and older, the risk of dying was between 18 and 25 percent lower compared to diabetic patients with a normal weight, the study found.

Although the study found associations between being older and having a lower death risk among diabetes patients, it did not establish a cause-and-effect relationship.
