Significance of high amylase levels in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients

DSC_0634Blood amylase levels in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients can be three times higher than the normal value with out any evidence of pancreatic disease.

This happens because amylase molecules with large molecular weight can’t pass in urine in CKD patients smoothly as in those with healthy kidney so high blood amylase levels are seen.

However, other causes of high amylase levels should be thought of if clinically indicated.
