In bacterial meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis eythematous maculopapular rash occur.

But have you ever wondered why such rashes occur?

Answer: these bacteria through blood stream land to the dermis layer of our skin. Here they damage the endothelial lining of blood vessels which give rise to the classic rash of meningococcemia

If this rash affected skin is biopsied on gram stain the culprit meningococci can be found.
