    The famous ‘like’ button 

    We can’t imagine a day in today’s world without social networking websites, they have become an integral part of us. No matter where we are, in the toilet or bedroom or in a conference, we are always in connection with these sites, and smartphone like small devices made this job much easier than before.

    Although the author don’t have a huge experience of these websites but have some experience with some of the most popular ones. The first thing to note in this regard is that very few of these popular websites keep a ‘dislike’ or ‘unlike’ sort of button, therefore we mostly get the choice to ‘like’ a post only. This sometimes make the scenario funny or painful; for instance when a news breaks that hundreds of people died in a flood or a terror act, and it receives ten thousand likes, what impression do you receive. Well it can be interpreted in different ways, some may mean that the news is good, and on the other hand some may perceive it as inhumane behaviour (because they might ask what is so nice about the sad news to like it).

    One quite commonly liked material I scrolled in one social networking site was liking of human bone fractures.  One example I recall, a guy who was driving motorcycle in high speed in drunk condition got about eighteen fractures all over is body and most were in his lower limbs. Well her girlfriend who seems to be a too caring individual, uploaded the photo of his plastered limb, and it received a few dozens of ‘likes’. Well that’s what is tech-age!

    Now, let’s explore why website owners don’t keep unlike button, and some even withdrew the button. One prime cause of not introducing the ‘unlike’ button might be, they are afraid that their users might be disappointed if there is an ‘unlike’ button. When it comes to individual level social networking very few of us would probably like to receive ‘unlikes’ to our posts.  A social networking owner would never disappoint their users, rather will prefer skipping the moral and value related queries. Money is honey after all.

    Like buttons sometimes can harm your business if you take those seriously. Few months back I read a news that few companies decided their products fondness on the basis of the ‘likes’ it received in social networking websites and they invested a lot for those products and in real life they didn’t find that profitable, rather they made some loss in business.  Such happens probably because of 2 reasons. First, there are millions of fake users on social networking sites, and your rival company can introduce them to ‘like’ your products and give you a false perception of being a hero. Second, even a genuine account holders ‘like’ don’t mean a lot always as a ‘like’ it needs a mouse click only. Some people hit like button for a product simply because ten other people liked it, and may be they don’t know anything about the product. Fake account holder’s ‘likes’ are also prevalent in election campaigns of various nations I believe, where even the worst corrupt leaders are flooded with ‘likes’ for their policies.

    So, next time when you judge something based on likes on social networking sites think twice!

    Effects of social networking on human brain 

    In today’s era there is hardly an individual who probably don’t know about face-book. For many people today, these social networking sites are just like some other essential commodities for life like oxygen or water. In present day society, may be in office or a bus stop people seem to be hauled on to these websites. But have you ever wondered why or what make people so crazy about these websites.

    To answer it lets glue this fact with a little bit of human anatomy. Recently a paper possibly showed that a region in human brain called ‘nucleus accumbens’ is related to a person’s attraction to the such social networking pages. This particular region of our brain serve as reward center, when we are rewarded this center generally glows with happiness. After receiving positive responses on facebook this region becomes active. Those who get lot of positive feedback in face-book probably have more active nucleus accumbens.

    If you browse through most popular social networking websites you may find that they generally have ‘like’ or ‘favorite’ button only. Interestingly the ‘dislike’ type negative response buttons are disappearing from various social web pages and prime cause of such may be that these websites try to feed our reward centers only; because at the end of the day all that matters for a web hosting company is its ‘share prices’ and bucks and for that they need to please you. In real life too there are many individuals who are sensitive to or proud about how many likes they got for a particular facebook post, and invest significant amount of time to cherish.

    These are probably called ‘tech-health’ days.
