Should emergency contraceptive pills be used regularly?

    dahlia-red-blossom-bloom-60597.jpeg

Emergency contraceptive pills are used to avoid unplanned pregnancy that might happen after unprotected sexual intercourse. Generally earlier the pills are taken its said to be best and generally, they are said to be of worth when using up to 72 hours of the intercourse, however, it might depend on the composition of the medicine, the manufacturer etc.

Medication dosages in emergency contraceptive pills are generally quite larger than regular contraceptive pills. One of the popular types of emergency contraceptive pills is those purely progesterone based. Progesterone is a type of hormone which is normally produced in females.

Therefore, regular frequent use of the emergency contraceptive pills is not appropriate. It increases chances of adverse effects. Many people feel that emergency contraceptive pills are a good solution for casual intercourse and undermine the need for the appropriate regular use of contraceptives. Such practice can be detrimental to those females who might plan to use emergency contraceptive pills causally.

What is love? A chemistry or biology?

It is not uncommon to find people referring love and sex as a ‘CHEMISTRY’ that plays between a couple, which finally leads to the emotional and physical bondage between them. But have you ever wondered if the word ‘CHEMISTRY’ is a misnomer with respect to love and sex.

When we talk about pure chemistry, technically it means either organic or inorganic chemistry. Inorganic chemistry primarily deals with various raw materials like iron, arsenic, cobalt etc. It’s less likely that inorganic chemistry has any major relation with love, may be organic chemistry might have some relations. Every sex related hormone have some sort of chemical structure, which have chemical bonds. So in this way we may relate love and sex with a branch of ‘CHEMISTRY’ called ‘organic chemistry’.

However, biology also seems to be important for love and sex. Sensations perceived via various sensory pathways (like visual, auditory, tactile (i.e. touch), olfactory (i.e. smell) etc.) are probably the first few sparks that are required to ignite the engine of love and passion in our brain which finally gears up the reproductive (genital) organs to complete the purpose of mating.

For the process of love making, two hormones known as testosterone and oestrogen have very important roles. Estrogen give females their lady contour by throwing more fat to specific sites of their body to squeeze out man’s passion. Similar is testosterone, takes care of the masculine features of male which makes women wild.

For rotating the wheel of love effectively the role of our nervous system can’t be undermined. Our nervous system can actually drive you crazy during the act of orgasm. Male depend solely on this system from erection to ejaculation.

Hypothalamus of our brain have a structure called septal nucleus which is responsible for our sexual urges. Besides that, we have a system in our brain called ‘limbic system’ which is too responsible for the sexual act.

One part of the brain, the Limbic System deals with and regulates emotions, memory, and sexual arousal. When it is not working properly, you will have feelings of depression and lethargy.
via SEX AND GLUE: THE EMOTIONAL BOND OF A PHYSICAL ACT

Therefore, it does not seem to be totally correct to define love and sex as a chemistry between two individuals, rather it’s more of raw hardcore BIOLOGY amalgamated with organic chemistry.

Before concluding I would love to leave this job into the reader’s hand to decide if love and sex is chemistry or biology. Whichever it may be, it should probably give us the eternal feeling of liveliness.

Why do the testicles of male hang outside their body?

If you are a male did you ever wonder why god kept the testicles (or testis) outside your body, hanging in a pouch or sac like thing called scrotum.

Obviously that outside hanging position makes them vulnerable to injuries when hit accidentally or kicked by someone deliberately, as frequently seen in movies and also in real life.

What would have happened if god had kept these two male ornaments inside the frame of the main male body rather than hanging outside?

Testicles are responsible for producing sperms. Human body temperature is much higher than what is required for sperm production and sperm survival. Therefore, if testicles were inside male’s body he would have been impotent because of defective or no sperm production. Since the testicles hang outside male’s body it’s not affected by the body heat directly and the air circulating around the scrotum keeps the testicles cooler, in comparison to the temperature of the body. This ambient temperature maintenance system allows sperm’s formation and survival. Sperm formation is also referred as spermatogenesis.

This same logic explains why tight underwear of male are discouraged? Tight underwear’s bring the testicles close to the body which raises the temperature inside to scrotum and testicles might find it unsuitable for spermatogenesis.

Another interesting phenomenon is the testicles moving closer or away from body due to variation of environmental temperature. At cold winters males testicles are drawn near to the body to protect sperms from the harsh cold, here they use body temperature to protect sperms from the cold.

That’s all for this edition in sex topic.

      Hello Doctor saha
I had a question I couldn’t find the answer anywhere!
Q: Does it affect the production of testosterone by testicles if someone set them inside the body by surgical action (on purpose)?
      Thanks

It would decrease the functions of testicles because the raised body temp of our body wouldn’t allow its normal functioning. Moreover, the likelihood of cancer increases.

Are women more proud of their gender?

People find various sort of things to be proud of, like their looks, pets, parents, spouse, nationality, ethnicity and so on. But today our discussion is regarding the proudness about one’s gender. Based on the daily life experiences, this author firmly believes that commonly females express proudness of their gender. Male rather tend to be quite about their gender. This trend is probably true both in developed and underdeveloped nations. If you have any statistics in this regard which supports or contradict this author’s views please share them.

First, let us see why males generally don’t express proudness of their sex. It may be simply because men are the dominating sex in daily social life in most parts of the world (probably hold true till today in certain western nations too). Therefore, they don’t find need of expressing themselves overtly. The same cause may have acted differently in case of females. Most women, especially in developing and underdeveloped nations are notoriously dominated and disciplined by their male counter parts of the society. This might be a trigger for these females to express proudness of their gender to express freedom and self-respect.

Social dominance is one issue. Another possible cause may be the woman’s role as a caregiver. Still today, in most homes, mothers take the burden of caring for their child, cooking for all members of the family and doing various household activities to keep the home living. Both in poor and rich nations most stay-at home mothers role are underestimated by their husbands. Husband, become important for the family since he keeps the economic pipeline of the home regular. This underestimates the domestic role of the wife. This attitude towards the housewives can decrease their self-esteem as a woman and may compel them to roar out finally, that they are proud of their sex, an attempt to establish the value of a woman.

Finally, beauty. Females worldwide are more likely to be concerned about it than men. Even most muscular men are found to show their muscular beauty without expressing any regards for his own sex. But female models or beauty pageants are always sympathetic about their gender and commonly expresses their proudness.

Whatsoever, the author believes that, unless a person has problems related to their gender identity, one should have respect for his or her own sex. Simultaneously, one should respect people of the opposite (or other) sexes too. None of us have had any role or option about determining our own sexes, it was the decision of the male and female gamete from which we originated, our genders are simply the outcome!

Male with small testicles are better fathers

This is an era when many young men and women are choosing to hunt their life partner over the internet. There are plenty of such matrimonial websites available all around the globe. What do you think today a bride wants to know about her future husband, before she chooses her finally? Besides the grooms social profile they also take interest about his educational credentials, job and economic profile. In addition to this, now a days various health related information are sought of, particularly the sexually transmissible diseases like HIV. Interestingly, in future some more amazing criteria may looked for in the groom and the one we are talking about here is the grooms testicle size.

Confused? Well let me explain. Recently, evidences by anthropologists found that men with small sized testicles are more caring than men with big testes. May be a old saying holds true – all that is big might not be better. When these men with small testes were showed their children’s picture, fMRI scans of their brain (fMRI i.e. functional-MRI, a new type of MRI scan that looks into blood’s moving pattern in brain) revealed increased activity in certain regions in brain. Since, women mostly look for a husband who will be caring to her kids, it’s likely in future such a criteria may be sought of in a groom’s credential. The size measurement shouldn’t be a headache, a ultra sonographer can provide most details of its topography like weight, volume, size etc.

Finally, there is one issue in regard to this which might not comfort men. It’s yet to be proved if being a caring father decreases the testes size or smaller testes size makes a male a caring father. It’s still in stage of- egg or chicken, which came first?

Read an excerpt in this regard:

A link between the size of a father\’s testicles and how active he is in bringing up his children has been suggested by scientists.

Researchers at Emory University, US, said those with smaller testicles were more likely to be involved with nappy changing, feeding and bath time.

They also found differences in brain scans of fathers looking at images of their child, linked to testicle size.

Artificial fertilization methods can cause mental retardation

Today’s discussion is about, if artificial methods of fertilization used in infertile couples have any detrimental effects on the newborns. Interestingly small amount of increased risk of mental retardation is feared of to occur in the newborn, although risk of autism were almost excluded. The specific cause of such decreased mental capabilities are yet to unfold but proposed hypothesis is the need of traditional methods of at least 2 embryos implantation in utero, during the in vitro fertilization (IVF). More than one embryo implantation increases the risk of developing multiples like twins or triplets and this increased the chance of preterm or low birth weight problems. And these are already blamed for affecting mental functions sometimes. Henceforth, one embryo implantation instead might be a better solution.

Some also suspect ICSI i.e. intracytoplasmic sperm injection (where a sperm is injected inside the cytoplasm of the egg), during this procedure, method of natural selection can’t take place since the sperm is chosen by humans rather than nature, which may not be the healthiest sperm. Whereas in IVF generally sperms are allowed to compete in a dish in lab to fertilize the ovum and mimic the natural process that takes place in internal reproductive organs of women.

ICD shock fear, adversely affects sex life

Today an increasing number of individuals are needing implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). Before moving in the topic let us have a brief introduction about ICD. If we break the big word- implantable cardioverter-defibrillator – implantable (means it’s implanted in our body, beneath our skin of chest but outside the ribcage), cardio(heart) and defibrillator (a device that defibrillates).

Defibrillation is nothing but giving electric shocks (ICD has a battery to shock) to control an extremely fast beating type heart  (some of which you might have heard like ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia etc.). These are same as those pedals we see in roadside or airports of most western nations to shock an individual’s chest, only difference is ICD’s are inside our body and they are automatic (whenever they perceive the heart to race in abnormally fast speed they shock the heart, and save life).

Readers shouldn’t confuse ICD with pacemakers which are used to maintain the heart rate intact and generally used in those with slow heart rates or have some blockage in hearts  own conduction system.

With that much of introduction now we are probably ready for today’s topic. Recent evidences show that  many young adults with congenital heart disease who are implanted with ICD’s are too anxious of  getting shocked anytime by the automatic life saving machine implanted underneath their chest skin. Such anxiety is so extreme that it is affecting their regular sexual life and resulting poorer sex life. This is happening for both males and females with ICD. Probably removing the ICD is not a wise solution in affected individuals since it may compromise life. According to experts, a counselling from mental health expert might help them battle their shock related anxiety. According to data of 2000 about a million of US adults have congenital heart disease and their numbers are rising every year. Which means an increasing number of adults will require ICD’s.

Decreasing HIV risk, in injection drug users

About 80% of all AIDS cases that occur in regions like Eastern Europe and Central Asia are due to injection drug uses like heroin etc. Although much of this couldn’t be prevented till date, now there is some hope of preventing an occurrence of AIDS in these individuals.

A Bangkok based study revealed that use of anti-HIV medications by injection drug users can almost half the risk of acquiring AIDS. Previously such prophylaxis showed some promise in men practicing sex with same-sex individuals and also in those practising  heterosexual relationships.

This is a remarkable advancement towards AIDS prevention.

    Teenage pregnancy and obesity

Since decades medical professionals and common man argued on the issue about the correct age to get pregnant and most importantly about teen pregnancy. Lets first look into the small piece of  statistics to understand its impact- according to an UNICEF report in 2001 teenage birth rate of USA is 52.1 which is the highest in the whole developed world. Among the European nations England has the highest teenage birth rate. About 1.25 million teenagers become pregnant in every year in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries they studied. (Reference: link)

Teenage pregnancy not only impact the teen mother physically, socially and  economically  it appears to have a long term impact on the women’s health. Recent studies show mothers who became pregnant before their twenties are more likely to be obese latter in their life. Obviously its worth mentioning that obesity is one of the worst epidemic in current world that not only is sometimes a stigma but can affect the health harshly and might might not show any mercy and kill people by means of a heart attack, stroke, diabetes etc.

I don’t want to stir the debate of teenage sex is good or bad, but since teenage pregnancy can have certain negative impacts thinking and knowing about it properly beforehand might be a wise way to deal with it. Talking to a trusted adult like parents, teachers and consulting a doctors to explore teen pregnancy and contraceptives might help pace the rhythm of life in perfect rhythm.
